A quick google search will yield dozens of articles, blog posts and research papers on the direct effect one’s workplace atmosphere has on productivity.

And they all point in one very clear direction: A happy worker is a productive worker.

But you don’t need scientific evidence to know that…you just need to look around you. Do you scramble to clean up your lunch as soon as you’ve finished eating? Or, are you a post-it hoarder who feels most at-home at a messy desk?

No matter your preference, the state of your workspace has subtle yet important effects on productivity and creativity levels.

Whether you thrive in chaos or keep your space military neat, creating and maintaining a preferred work environment is a key to success, which is why it’s worth spending some time on.

5 Ways to Personalize Your Office Workspace to Keep You Motivated:

#1: Make it your own

An easy way to boost the positive vibes in your space is to bring in some of your favorite things. Great photos of family and friends make the space instantly welcoming. You can post your favorite quotes and thoughts where you’ll see them each day to keep you inspired, or choose a funny message that makes you smile.

Make your workspace comfortable and cheerful by incorporating accessories in your favorite bright color. Saturated tones of green, blue, and yellow are some recommended choices.

#2: Remember the Scents

Our well being and productivity can be influenced by all of our senses, and it’s easy to please your sense of smell in the workplace. Particularly if your space can be a little stuffy, it’s a great idea to infuse the air with a favorite scent — just make sure to keep it subtle so it’s not intruding on anyone else’s air space. Scents like lemon, rosemary, and mint are known to make us more alert. You can add a few drops of essential oils to a half-cup of water and mist your area lightly for a nice effect.

#3: Nature

Bringing a bit of the outdoors in is a very healthy workplace practice. Studies have shown clear benefits of exposure to natural light. People with longer exposure sleep better and tend to be more physically active than those workers who labor in a windowless space. So if your desk isn’t near a window, make it a point to spend some time in natural light.

You can bring some nature right to your desk by adding a healthy green plant. There are several species that thrive indoors. They give the whole office a lift, and have the bonus function of cleaning the air!

#4: Comfort for Concentration

There few things that kill motivation quicker than an aching back or a stiff neck, so optimize your physical comfort to boost productivity. Ideally, your workplace might include a comfortable lounge or break room that lets you kick back and get away from the desk during the course of the day.

If that’s not available to you, consider changing your office chair for one with more adjustment possibilities. Ergonomic seating and desks with adjustable height can make a tremendous difference in your ability to stay focused and productive.

#5: Stock Up

Make your workplace a great place to be, and you will stay motivated all day. Be sure to keep a stock of your favorite healthy snacks close at hand so that hunger won’t force you to stop when you’re really in the zone.  Ideally, your workplace will have a full kitchen, but even then it’s a good idea to keep a few nourishing morsels close at hand. And, whether it’s bottled or comes from a cooler, drink plenty of water during the day.
